2012 Review - Limbo - Game of the Year

2012 has been an odd year for me excluding the never-ending or multi-player iOS games & DLC I have only completed the following 10 games

Enslaved (Xbox 360)
Gears of War 3 (Xbox 360)
Lara Croft Guardian of Light (360 - Xbox Live Arcade)
Limbo (360 - Xbox Live Arcade)
Grand Prix Story (iOS)
Dead Island (Xbox 360)
Assassins Creed Revelations (Xbox 360)
Uncharted (PS3)
Gatling Gears (360)
Assassin's Creed 3 (Xbox 360)

Only one of those games was released in 2012 (AC3) & that was ok at best but not exceptional. The AC games were more of the same, Uncharted I found frustrating but was impressed with the Hollywood style action. Gears of War 3 again was just more of the same on a bigger scale. Enslaved I did enjoy very much, it does not offer anything new to the mature gamer but what it does offer is a nice action adventure game done right.

I have been trying to go through and complete some of my many XBLA purchases during the year managing only three but it is one of these games that I enjoyed spending a Sunday afternoon tackling. Limbo with its blend of action & puzzle kept me enthralled for a few hours & even had me asking questions after I completed the game.

I am hoping to spend less time watching TV shows (which would have been easier to choose a winner “Game of Thrones”) & Movies this year which should hopefully give me approx. 10 hours a week for gaming.

I am really going to try and spend as little as possible this year on gaming, I will not be buying any of the new consoles on release & have no desire for a Wii U. With my iOS stack of games, back catalogue of 360/PS3 games & steam pile of shame I think I am spoilt for choice. I finished off 2012 spending a lot of time playing XCom, it is a shame I did not purchase this on release because this would have easily been my game of the year.

With my back catalogue gleaming with Red Dead Redemption, Mass Effect Trilogy, Bioshoscks, Deus Ex, Uncharted 3, Fez, Journey, Mark of the Ninja & many many more I think 2013 is going to be an amazing year for gaming.

Limbo - Completed

I'm working my way through the Xbox Live Arcade purchases, Limbo was purchased some time in 2010, so nearly 2 years later I get round to playing it.

First is the black & white art style which I actually quite like & then come the puzzles. The puzzles will have you either tearing your hair out or grinning with a big smile because you have figured them out. Some have you travelling back & forwards to complete & others have you timing your jumps to avoid instant death.

On the subject of death you will be dying a lot whilst trying to complete the various puzzles & dangers thrown at you but thankfully the game takes you back to the start of your puzzle for you to try again ...and most likely fail.

The plot truthfully I have no idea, you are a boy who is trying to escape from what? & why? That is left to either your imagination or google to read the plot. I won't say much about the ending except that it is very odd & actually in style with the game I suppose.

It is a very short game easily completed in four to five hours but if you love your games taxing your brain & are bored at looking at colourful games then Limbo is the game for you. I for one very much enjoyed the experience & would recommend you stop reading this post & go play Limbo.
